“Tosca was never meant to be a glorious one-off — it was just the start of something new and exciting for the city.”

STUART PENDRED Founder and Artistic Director

Dear friends of Oxford Opera,

March 2018 saw the birth of Oxford Opera Company with its debut performance of Puccini’s Tosca. It was an operatic experience that exceeded all hopes and expectations. Involving a cast of world-class professional soloists; a chorus of over 40 students from different schools and colleges across the city; an audience made up of opera-lovers, old and new, at least 35% of whom were seeing a live operatic performance for the first time. There was an energy and excitement that won’t be forgotten by anyone fortunate enough to have been present.

In 2019 to indicate the ambition of Oxford Opera, the next production is a fully-staged performance of Bizet’s most popular opera Carmen. This performance will be taking place, not in one of the city’s beautiful churches, but at the Playhouse Theatre. Once again, we will be bringing an incredible cast of professional principals to work alongside a chorus comprising students of all ages, from a broad spectrum of the city’s schools and accompanied by local musicians.

Beyond Carmen, we have even greater and more exciting plans for Oxford Opera and the city that we want to serve. Plans for 2020 will include an Oxford Opera production of another Puccini classic—la Boheme. We are also looking to develop a Youth Programme, commission a new children’s opera, and create more opportunities for local people to engage with this most spectacular of art-forms.

There is a vision and passion to make Oxford Opera successful, but we need to secure sufficient funding to make these dreams a reality. Your support big and small would allow us:

  • To continue to attract the best professionals, on stage and off;
  • To maintain our ability to offer ambitious projects, accessible to all;
  • To allow us to spread the word and reach audiences new to opera, irrespective of their age;
  • To support the creation and development of youth programmes and outreach into schools including the development of the Oxford Opera Youth Chorus and the commission and composition of a Children’s Opera;
  • To ensure the long-term future of Oxford Opera.

“Oxford Opera Company has demonstrated just how much can be achieved with outstanding vision, inclusivity, collaboration and good will. Long may it continue!”
